As the largest organ of the body, your skin plays a vital role in your overall health and well-being. It protects you from the elements of the environment, regulates your temperatures, and even shields your interior organs from being exposed to things that could cause serious harm, such as germs.
In addition to playing an important part in your physical health, your skin also does a lot for your self-confidence. Nobody can deny how great they feel when their skin is soft, smooth and glowing.
Since your skin is exposed to so much (environmental pollutants, sweat, oil, the accumulation of dead cells as it grows,) and since it does so much for you, developing a skincare routine is so important. Not only will it help to keep this organ healthy, but it will also help to keep you looking – and feeling – your best. But trying to figure out the best routine can be a challenge. With so many products available, trying to determine what will work best for you can be overwhelming.
So, how can you develop a proper skincare routine? Here’s some helpful tips to guide you…
Identify Your Skin Type
First things first; you need to figure out what type of skin you have. Once you do, you will be able to find the right products and develop a routine that will work best for you.
There are four main skin types:
- Oily: Tends to look shiny and greasy, and feels greasy, too. Additionally, the pores are usually large.
- Dry: Looks flaky and rough, and can feel tight.
- Combination: Oily in some spots (the nose, forehead and chin, for example) and dry in others, (the cheeks, for instance.)
- Sensitive: Aggravated when exposed to certain elements, such as makeup or face cream, and can burn, itch or flake after exposure to these elements.
No matter what type of skin you have, washing it on a daily basis is a must; yes, even for dry skin. It removes the buildup of dead skin cells, dirt, debris, makeup, oil, sweat and anything else that your skin may be exposed to.
Washing at least once a day is recommended, though two times a day – once in the morning and once at night – is ideal. Make sure that you start with the right cleanser: if you have dry skin, try a cream-based cleanser that is specially formulated for dry skin; if your skin is oily, choose a gel formula that is made for oily skin.
Rinse your skin with lukewarm water and work the cleanser in. Rinse thoroughly, again, with lukewarm water, and pat dry with a clean, soft towel.
Apply a Toner
After you washing, apply a toner. This produce is designed to remove any excess oil that may still remain on the surface, keeping it looking fresher longer. Choose an alcohol-free toner to avoid aggravating the skin and drying it out. Apply the toner to a cotton ball and gently dab it onto your skin.
Moisturizing is important for all skin types, even oily, as it helps prevent it from drying out.
Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that is formulated for your specific skin type. Apply it right after you apply toner, while the skin is still damp; doing so will help to seal in the moisture.
Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen every day; even on cloudy days. It takes about 15 minutes for the sun to damage the skin, which is why sunscreen is so important.
Even if your moisturizer has a sunscreen in it, it’s a wise idea to apply an additional layer of protection. Choose an oil-free formula that shields out both UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of 30, at least.
With these tips, you can develop an effective skincare routine that will keep your skin healthy and radiant.
